I have to have surgery on April 1st (a hysterectomy) so am spending this month trying to get ready.
My mom and step dad will be here 1 week before and stay until 2 weeks after (Yay! We get to celebrate a holiday with them for the first time in 9 years!) so that will help immensely, but I don't want to be a burden to anyone, so here is the plan.
Since we still haven't fully unpacked and arranged things the way they need to be (It has only been 5 months. lol) and we have all of this camping gear to find a place for, that is my focus this weekend. It just seems odd that my walk in closet is stuffed full while we have empty cabinets and large pieces of furniture designed for storage! We have a big pile of stuff to go to either the thrift store or freecycle, and a pile of stuff to just go to the trash. Today I am working on the balcony - which for the last 5 months has has a neatly stacked pile of totes full of various junk.
The doctor said I will be on bedrest for 6 weeks, so I am planning to make freezer meals to help out. I am lucky that Marty is a Chef, and 2 of my 3 boys can cook a meal with their hands tied behind their back (and the other one is anal enough to follow a recipe perfectly) so meals aren't a huge concern, but I figured that since they will have to do everything anything I can do beforehand to help will be welcomed. My step dad has special dietary concerns, so I will have extras of the things he can eat on hand.
My friend Dana gave me some good ideas for things to make. If I make multiples of each, we should be set. Right now the plan is-
taco meat - tacos, taco salad, quesidillas
grilled chicken breasts - salads, tacos, quesidillas
refried beans - tacos, taco salad, quisidillas, burritos
pulled pork - sandwiches
pizza dough- might prebake some and leave some as ballls of dough or just leave all as balls of dough
turkey pot pie filling - I have a turkey in the freezer that I am going to cook this week. We will have a meal from it and use the leftovers for pot pies. They can just make drop biscuits for on top
various chicken pieces in various marinades (greek, teriyaki, lemon)
Valeria's lasagna - Since you don't precook the noodles, it freezes really well
hamburger patties - grill and have hamburgers, add gravy and you have Salsbury steak (something my step dad can eat)
I am gathering up some of the things I will need to take to the hospital with me, and will need to have at home. So far the list of things I have to buy isn't too big, so thats good (and cheap!)
Yesterday I was feeling a lot overwhelmed, but with a plan in place I think my anal retentive, ADHD brain can cope.

Sorry to hear you need surgery. Clarify "bed rest" with your doctor; you might be able to do "couch rest", etc. I've done bedrest and hysterectomy, so just holler if you need suggestions. Dana is the queen of meals, though! Hang in there--you will feel so much better when all is said and done.

I was going to email you and ask you some questions. I guess it is the diVinci robot assisted one... which they said was a shorter recovery time for the incisions, but still just as long because of the internal stuff. My Dr. said that one of the biggest problems they have is that people think they are healed and do too much.
I would love any tips you can toss my way!
